Before he left office, Ronald Reagan issued the National Sanctity of Human Life Day Proclamation, January 14, 1988, the last paragraph of which provides in pertinent part:
“Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim and declare the unalienable PERSONHOOD of every American, from the moment of conception until natural death…”
“From conception until natural death” is in accord with God’s Commandment Thou Shalt Not Kill, and it is in accord with our Declaration of Independence which guarantees the unalienable right to life.
Prior to Roe v. Wade, all states in the United States made it a crime for a doctor to perform an abortion. Many state laws had exceptions for rape, incest, or health of the mother, but no state law set forth an arbitrary number of weeks in the beginning of the life of the preborn child when it was okay to kill that child.
Life begins, like everything else, at the beginning. God told Jeremiah:
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee (Jeremiah 1: 5)
To fall into the politically expedient in a post-Roe world where preborn children are at risk if they are inconvenient or not affordable, and seek to place a number of weeks on a continued right of abortion is to invite an arbitrary number at the end of life when the elderly are inconvenient or not affordable.
Human life is sacred. We are made in the Image of God. Our soul bears his Image.
The soul that rises with us at conception, our life’s star, has elsewhere it’s setting and cometh from afar. (Jeremiah 1:5)
The same soul, made in the Image of God, does not age. It is still with us, intact, when our bodies (our earthly house of clay) become frail and advanced in years. If we are to remain a ‘City on a Hill’ whose light is seen by the rest of the world, we must remain in God’s Light in the way we treat preborn children and the elderly.
The devil would like nothing better than to extinguish that light. He has already extinguished it in those countries of the world that have little respect for human life or human rights.
Yours very sincerely and respectfully,
R. Martin Palmer
P.S. Dr. Jerome Lejeune called RU-486 (developed in his own country of France) “the world’s first human pesticide”! Commonly known as the ‘morning after pill’, it is estimated that it will kill more preborn children by chemical abortion than surgical abortion ever did.
The devil wants even a six week ban on abortion because it legalizes chemical abortion. Protecting the sanctity of human life is a little like cupping water in your hands. You have to hold your fingers very tightly or you lose it all.
Ronald Reagan’s Emancipation Proclamation of Preborn Children is in accord with God’s Commandment from conception until natural death, THOU SHALT NOT KILL.
